Issue 20 - Apr. 12

Curriculum Connections...

Happy Friday! I hope everyone had a wonderful week. I want to begin by congratulating Daisy and Jackie again on their impending bundles of joy - we know you are both going to be great moms! Thank you to Sunshine for throwing such a great baby shower - the cake was delicious! Thank you to Joey, Joe and crew for getting everything set up and cleaned up afterwards. I also want to officially welcome Caitlyn, who is working in Jen and Joe's room - we are so happy to have you. Also, Ashley will be taking over for Jackie while she is out so please say hi when you see her in either Ginny's or Lesley's room next week!

On another note, I also want to thank all of you for indulging me in allowing me to share my experiences from Tuesday - the share was extremely cathartic for me and I hope it was somewhat interesting to you. Tuesday was a reminder that no matter how stressful and crazy things get, staying calm and looking for the humor are great coping strategies for me. I am looking forward to our Faculty Meeting next week as we begin to unpack the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts (please remember that one person from every grade level should come to the meeting with their iPad to take notes - I recommend using Evernote).

Additionally, a special thank you to Mandy, Allison and Joan who helped me welcome our incoming Kindergarten parents at Orientation the other night. We officially have 52 munchkins registered for September, which means we are definitely going to have three classes next year. Also, a special thank you to Ally G. for putting together an amazing video, featuring our kids, that we shared with the parents at the Orientation experience. Check it out here...

As we all know, state testing is coming up next week. It means that every free room in the building is being occupied and it is important that we try to keep the building as quiet and calm as possible to support our students being tested. Please review the email with all the scheduling changes and if you are proctoring the test, please read the directions in advance so you know what the children will be experiencing! I hope you will all join me in making next week a NO HW Week, at least in grades 3, 4 & 5 - they need a break! Just so you know, on the days of the state test, I will be in by 6:30am to package them so they are available for pick up by 7:30am. Remember, no one is allowed to score their own tests - just administer the test, collect them, put them in alphabetical order and submit them to me. An email will come out early next week for all the scheduling changes for the Math State Tests, so be on the lookout for that email.

Fortunately, it is not all about state testing in our building. There are so many amazing things happening in our building and I am lucky enough to see them during my many visits. This week I got to see...

  • Kim use a "Verbal Exit Slip" at the end of her speech session with three students. The children were encouraged to reflect on what they practiced and reflect on what they did well. It was so awesome to hear them reflect on their learning. Check out this 10 second video clip of Alex sharing his learning...

  • I also had a chance to visit with Christine, Donna and Melanie's classrooms as they were launching Shared Reading. The children were all provided an excerpt from a graphic novel that they are in the process of dissecting over the course of the week. It was such a powerful and appropriate way to expose the children to a different genre and then model how to navigate this very different type of text. This definitely speaks to the power of Shared Reading - thank you!
  • I also had a chance to visit with Lesley's class while they were in the Computer Lab and they were working on their Planet PowerPoints. I was so impressed by how well they were navigating PowerPoint and how thoughtful they were about the information they included and the details they were attending to in order to enhance their presentations - great to watch!
  • I also spent some time in Ginny's room and was so inspired by the stories the children were publishing as part of the Writing Workshop experience. The stories were well written, had a clear beginning, middle and end and also featured beautiful illustrations - we have some serious authors on our hands!
  • Finally, I hung out in Risa's room where Risa, Jeanne and Terri were all working with different groups of children to help them generate science themed mathematics word problems. The children were so engaged and Jeanne found a way to seamlessly integrate the iPad into the experience - it was an awesome site!

I know I said it at the Faculty Meeting but it warrants being said again - the quality of instruction in our building far surpasses any amount or type of test prep - KUDOS TO YOU!

Tech Tip of the Week...
To continue building on our work with the iPads, one of the great things you can do is create videos of your students participating in various activities within the classroom. Once these videos are created, which can be student produced and directed (remember, kids collaborating and creating is a great way to use the iPads), you could upload them to a secure site where you can then easily share links to the videos with the parents. By doing this, you dont have to worry about trying to email the actual video, which may be too large! The two best options that I know about are...

YouTube - where you can create your own private account (links to a gmail account if you have one). You can then download the YouTube app to your iPad and once you shoot a video, you merely click on the arrow at the top of the video and one of the choices that will come up is YouTube (along with emailing or texting the video directly). You can then upload the video to YouTube and just click on the setting that says UNLISTED as the way to load the videos and then, only people who you share the link with can actually see the video. The other great feature about YouTube is that connects perfectly to Blogger if you use that for a class blog!

Vimeo - another web based video hosting site (that also has an app for the iPad) where you can upload videos and then email links to parents!

While playing handball at recess with some kids earlier in the week (and beating them all), one of them said, "Mr. Sinanis, if handball was an Olympic sport, you could win a gold medal!" LOL! I think this is seriously my only chance at Olympic glory - assuming my opponent is a 3rd Grader! LOL!

Issue 19 - Apr. 5

Curriculum Connections...

HAPPY TGIF! I hope everyone had a wonderful first week back from Spring Recess. It was a really busy week and I can't wrap my head around the fact that we entering the final stretch of the school year - this has been the fastest year ever! The next few weeks are going to fly by between state testing, literacy planning meetings with Lisa D., end of year trips, WRAP testing, Reorganization Meetings and a bunch of other things. With that in mind, I am hoping we can all stay as stress-free as possible - the tone we create in the building directly impacts our kids!

As some of you may know, yesterday I spent the day shadowing a student in Rande's class. I made the choice to do this because I felt it was really important for me to see our school through the eyes of a student - our most important "clients"! I wanted to see what we were doing well, what we could be doing better and I wanted to get a feeling about how our kids see our school. Well, the experience was unbelievable for me. First off, a special thank you to Rande for hosting me for the day and making me feel like one of her students - they even called Tony for the day (that hasn't happened since I was a fourth grade teacher in the city where all the students called the teachers by their first name). During my day in 5th Grade I had a chance to play Math Jeopardy, practiced the Chorus songs in Music class with Clare, experienced Pink Shirt Day (a special day in Canada commemorating an anti-bullying effort), wrote a poem about being a Bystander, had lunch and recess with the kids, participated in the independent reading experience and made my way to the Computer Lab to do some research on Canada. Overall, it was an AWESOME day and I confidently went home (exhausted - sitting on the rug wasn't easy on my legs) knowing that we do right be kids here at Cantiague and they feel it and know it. They feel safe, secure, confident, respected, valued, appreciated and most importantly, they are HAPPY! Our kids have a good time during the day because they are immersed in meaningful, powerful and important learning experiences. THANK YOU all for making that possible for our kids! I know that we aren't perfect and there are things we will continue to do better but the bottom line is, Cantiague Elementary is an awesome place for kids!

LAST CALL - if you have not done so yet, please take a few minutes to read our Six Word Educational Mission Statements (click here) and then leave a comment about how YOU INSPIRE children (inspiration was a word that showed up in many people's mission statements)!!

Finally, as you know, I devoted as much time as possible to traveling around the building to capture the AMAZINGNESS! During my visits this week, I saw a lot of great stuff including...

  • Book Clubs in Jill's class and the kids running their club were really impressive and mature! Check out this video and listen to them go through the process of selecting a book...

  • Grade 5 General Music/Chorus with Clare was a blast where the children excitedly sang their songs and rehearsed for their upcoming spring concert. Clare makes the experience fun and personalized - it was so much fun! Check out this video of them in action...

  • I got to spend some time in Carly and Nancy's room during Independent Reading time and I cannot say enough amazing things about the work that goes on in that room during independent reading time! Each child is engaged in a meaningful literacy activity whether they are reading independently and tracking their thoughts, conferring with their teachers or participating in a Book Club (click here for my latest blog post about the Book Club experience in our school) - the children have really grown as readers this year!
  • I got to listen to MaryAnn speaking with Mandy's class (with a special volunteer - Linda Schiffer) about mindful behavior with an emphasis on PERSPECTIVE! It was so impressive to hear the children talk about what it means to look at things from someone else's perspective - so sophisticated and important - WOW!
  • I have watched children Book Shopping in different classrooms and the experience is such a positive one. The kids love looking through the different bins to find a "just right" book. It was so awesome hearing them think aloud about what they liked about the books and which ones they might pick!

Issue 18 - Mar. 15

Curriculum Connections...

Good morning and HAPPY TGIF to all! I hope everyone has an excellent upcoming Spring Break next week - it is our last chance to get some rest and relaxation before the push towards the end of the school year. Kelly, Paul and I will actually be taking a little trip to DisneyWorld to celebrate Paul's successful surgery and amazing recovering - I cannot wait to have breakfast with Mickey and go on Space Mountain for the first time - he finally reached the 48" height limit needed to ride it (so important to celebrate the small things in life)!

I hope everyone had an awesome week as we celebrated our annual PARP Week. Thank you all for working so hard to make this week such an incredible success. From the classroom teachers who kept the tone positive and light during PARB, to our many specialists (including Pam and Joey) who stepped in at the last minute to read during our Community Read-In event, to Lorraine who booked Jester Jim and helped plan the whole week - BRAVO Team Cantiague because the overall experience was extremely well received by the community and the end result was that the children grew as readers. The PARP Week experience ends today with PARB for students in Gr. 4 & 5. Meanwhile, in regards to Jester Jim, the children were buzzing for the rest of the day about how much they loved the whole performance and experience - it was engaging and fun! On a personal note, thank you all for cheering me on while on stage during the whole juggling experience - I was so stressed about messing up!  :)

Please note that you should keep this Fast Friday Focus because it will cover the next two weeks (the weeks before and after the Spring Recess)!

Also, if you have not done so yet and would like to drop the PTA a Thank You Note for the Staff Appreciation Luncheon please feel free to leave a note in their mailbox in the Main Office or you could email Mrs. Lefkowitz or Mrs. Lorber who oversaw the whole experience - I know they would appreciate it! In the end, they did a great job because the food was delicious, the dessert was unreal and the opportunity to just get together and enjoy each other's company was priceless!

On another note, I want to thank all of our classroom teachers for the amount of hard work dedicated to generating such amazing report card comments. You all know your children so well and you were able to spotlight the positive growth and acknowledge the areas that need to approve. BRAVO to each of you - even though reading the comments is time consuming, it is an incredible experience - thank you!

Additionally, if you have not done so yet, please take a few minutes to read our Six Word Educational Mission Statements (click here) and then leave a comment about how YOU INSPIRE children (inspiration was a word that showed up in many people's mission statements)! This is a wonderful opportunity for us to qualify how we, as a learning community, inspire children to learn and grow so lets seize the opportunity!

Finally, as you know, I devoted as much time as possible to traveling around the building to capture the AMAZINGNESS! During my visits this week, I...

  • Watched Dawn working in a variety of capacities in the Sanderly's Grade 1 Co-Teaching class! From running small learning groups, to managing several behavior plans at one time, to implementing consequences and rewards depending on specific student behaviors, Dawn does it all with a smile on her face and with grace and patience - BRAVO!
  • Observed several awesome things happening with the Montonellis! I had a chance to observe the children during the Book Club meeting time and I was blown away by their level of engagement and independence - WOW! The children were also doing some impressive work earlier in the week with equivalent fractions where they were fluidly using multiples to come up with equivalent fractions! Finally, they participated in the first Mystery Skype experience in our building (that I know of) where they connected with another class in the Northeast and kids from both classes were interviewing each other to figure out exactly where they were located on a map - AWESOME! Check out this short video clip from the start of the Mystery Skype experience...

  • Had the chance to hear Skylar (from Team Marsen) read her winning essay about why school makes her feel good - check out a short video clip from last night's Board Meeting...

  • Hung in out with the Levermans while they were working on their social studies projects related to their study of Colonial America. One partnership, who had been researching the clothes from Colonial Times, was mapping out a plan to create a diorama where they would simulate a Colonial Times Fashion Show - their thought process and planning was IMPRESSIVE!
  • Had the opportunity to cover Meryl's class for about an hour on Wednesday and I had a blast! Meryl let me break the rules and do something fun so I challenged the students to create brochures about Cantiague for incoming K students and they did an AWESOME job! Thank you Meryl!

Issue 17 - Mar. 8

Curriculum Connections...

Happy Friday to everyone! Happy TGIF! I hope we all had a great first full week of March - hard to believe that there are only two more weeks in March and then we will be on our Spring Break. I know the next two weeks will be incredibly busy between PARP, PTA Staff Appreciation Luncheon, report cards and the many Parent/Teacher Conferences. If there is a specific conference that you would like me to attend, please let me know ASAP so I can put it on my calendar. Typically, the March conferences feature conversations about next year and the possible placement of students. Please let the parents know that if they have any concerns about placement, especially a de-request, they should put that in an email to me because if it is not in writing, it will fall through the cracks. Furthermore, remind them that we do not honor teacher requests. Finally, inform them that there may be movement of staff so we are not sure who is teaching what next year - that should help fend them off - a little!

On another note, I want to share that Kelly, Paul and I were in the city yesterday afternoon for Paul's two week Post-Op appointments with the Pediatric Orthopedist and the Plastic Surgeon. Everything went well and the orthopedist was actually thrilled with the results and explained that the increased pain was because he was able to extend the rod further than he ever did before. The upside, Paul gained almost 2 inches of height because of the extension so we were all thrilled. In the end, Paul convinced the doctor to dance with him for a Harlem Shake video, which was hysterical! Thank you again for all of your concern and support over the last few weeks - I really appreciate it!

Finally, as I do each week, I devoted as much time as possible to traveling around the building to capture the AMAZINGNESS! During my visits this week, I...

  • Watched Daisy working with her assigned student in 4th Grade and I was so impressed by her interactions with him. She was not only positive, patient and extremely compassionate towards him but she also worked tirelessly to modify his work to develop a curriculum specifically for him!
  • Observed Jeanne, who is such an incredible asset to the entire Cantiague community and specifically the Learning Center, collaborate with various aides and specialists to plan for her students! Jeanne's ability to connect with some of the most involved students and stop at nothing to figure out a way to get them to learn is inspiring - THANK YOU Jeanne!
  • Had the chance to watch MaryAnn interact with a child who was feeling angry and she was able to calm the student down and validate the way the child was feeling simply by listening, not judging and acknowledging the student's feelings. This is just one example of all the amazing things that MaryAnn does each and every day - Cantiague could not function without her! From the lunch groups, to the MindUp experience, to her facilitation of CST, MaryAnn is critical to our success!
  • Watched Christina G. working with her student in 2nd Grade in the hallway and observing their interactions brought a huge smile to my face because her patience, extremely positive attitude and constant smile clearly makes the student feel great about himself! Thank you for working so hard with your student - he has grown so much as a result of your efforts!
  • The wonderful and meaningful integration of the iPads in various classrooms... Ginny used it for a small group reading experience; Team Sanderly used it to have a student record herself reading aloud and listen to herself to build fluency; Allison, Lesley and Janine are actively Tweeting all the exciting things happening in their classrooms! Thank you all (and everyone else) for the meaningful technology integration into your learning spaces!

Tech Tip of the Week...
With the expansion of our iPad pilot with one in almost every room (ten more were ordered this week so each classroom will have at least one and the first person to read this, find me and correctly identify the title of the last post I published on MY blog will get a treat), click on this link to check out a list of some great educational APPS...

THRILLING THURSDAY THOUGHTS

Curriculum Connections...

Happy Valentine's Day to the whole Cantiague team! This day is all about the love... love for our families... love for our friends... and love for our work family!! So, I hope you all feel the love coming your way because working in this building brings me a tremendous amount of joy, pride and happiness, which I depend on to get me through the difficult times! I hope everyone enjoys the upcoming Winter Break - this week off could not come at a better time! It will be a prime opportunity for all of us to rest, relax and recharge for the month of March, which is a busy one!

On another note, thank you all for your participation in our staff raffle/fundraiser for Hegarty Elementary School - it is so awesome to know that we are handing them a check for $5,700 from our community. We would not have sold as many raffles if it wasnt for all of you making such a dedicated effort - THANK YOU!

Additionally, just as a reminder, I will not be here after the break for at least three days because of Paul's upcoming surgery, which is scheduled for Monday, February 25th. I cannot begin to thank each of you for your support and understanding over the last few days in regards to this upcoming procedure. Although at this point surgery for Paul is "routine", it is never easy and it is totally nerve wracking for us as his parents but being in such a supportive and positive environment makes it that much easier so THANK YOU! Also, a special thank you to Laura and Pam for always holding down the fort in my absence... you ROCK!!

Please keep these Thrilling Thursday Thoughts because it will cover the next two weeks (because I will be out the week after the break)!

Finally, as I try each week, I devoted as much of my time as possible traveling around the building to capture the AWESOMENESS and during my visits this week, I...

  • Watched two first graders playing Sight Word Ping Pong in Lisa's room! It was such a fun way to have the children practice their sight words - each ping pong ball had a basic sight word written on it and the children took turns spelling the word, saying the word and then tossing the ball to their partner who had to repeat the exercise - what a wonderful way to turn something rote into something engaging and kinesthetic!

  • Saw our 4th Graders in the Levermans participating in a "Spanish Mid-Term" with Milissa and they did an awesome job! After filling in a sheet where they introduced themselves in Spanish, the children then got up and acted out an exchange and their work was excellent as they could say hello, introduce themselves and share some relevant personal information - it was impressive!

  • Watched our 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders do their Chinese New Year announcements with Pei-Shan, which were truly incredible! Not only were the children excited but their singing was beautiful! I can barely carry a tune in English so to see them singing entire songs in Mandarin was impressive - BRAVO! Check out this short video...

  • Saw our kindergarteners getting ready for the Special Person poetry celebration! They were getting their poems prepared and I cannot even begin to describe how impressed I am with their ability to meaningfully embed various poetic crafts (like repitition or figurative language) into their work - AWESOME!

  • Watched our Alex, Rosanna, Jen and Joe bring their classes together for a Valentine's Day craft project and their collaborative efforts were impressive! To see the fifth graders guiding the first graders through their work and then proudly displaying their final creations was pretty cool!!

  • I spent some time in Jill's room where I watched the children do some basic algebra problems and the work was impressive. The children were trying to solve 13 - ? = 9 and they were using their whiteboards to work out the problem using whatever strategy made sense!
