Curriculum Connections...

Happy TGIF to everyone as we launch into the final week of the year before we kick off 2015! I would like to begin by wishing everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR (this is the final Fast Friday Focus of 2014) and may the new year be filled with health, happiness and only wonderful things for each of you and your loved ones - you all deserve the best! 2014 was an interesting year for me, both professionally and personally (whether it was the whole gay thing or NYS Principal of the Year, it was quite the adventure) and during many moments of uncertainty over the last year, the one constant and certain thing in my life was #Cantiague - the kids, families and most importantly, each of you. Thank you for your support, encouragement and compassion over the last year. I know that I am kicking off 2015 as a better person, educator and father because of this space and because of the fact that I am finally comfortable in my own skin... THANK YOU!

As a follow-up to our conversation at the FEO on Tuesday, we know there are many students in our space who need us to STAND BY THEM... STAND UP FOR THEM... and be their personal cheerleader even during the most difficult times. As we discussed, we make these things through the relationships we cultivate with our kids - time is fleeting but strong relationships sustain us and our work. From my perspective, in order to nurture healthy relationships, we need to let go of the curriculum and educate with our hearts! Relationships. Smiles. Heart. Transparency. Insight. When we can embrace that these concepts should be as much a part of our educational philosophy as differentiation, standards and instructional techniques, we could take the connections with our students to a whole other level. Healthy and positive relationships with our students should always be our goal. Relationships rooted in trust, respect and heart can take a nice classroom and make it an extraordinary space. When our kids know that we value, respect and love them, they will develop higher levels of self-confidence and feel safe enough in their environment to take risks with their learning.

So, here are some things I have watched many of you do that speak to the power of educating with heart...

1) Share your passions, interests, fears and everything in between with your students; share yourself!

2) Smile! Each day, especially the really difficult ones, should feature smiles from the educator because if the educator is smiling, then the chances that the children will also be smiling are pretty high!

3) Talk to your kids... every single day! Not just about their homework, tests or assignments... talk to your kids about their lives outside of school; about their passions, interests and fears; talk to your kids and listen to them every single day!

4) Love your kids... yes... even if love doesn't come naturally to you, find it somewhere in your heart and soul and wrap your kids up in that love... they deserve it and will access it if and when they need it!

5) Build time into the educational experience for everyone to explore their passions and interests. When children are empowered to take control over their learning and direct it on some levels, a different buzz permeates the space!

6) Have fun as much as possible. Don't save the fun time for Free Time on Friday; instead, give the kids a chance to have fun during math, reading and writing each and every day because when kids are having fun their brains release endorphins, which increases their availability to learning!

This week, as I walked around #Cantiague this week, I spotted the following #EduWins...

  • Special thank you to Lisa P. for doing an amazing job modeling the F&P Benchmark Assessment during the PD Day for Grades K & 4. Not only was the assessment tool thoroughly implemented, but Lisa's ensuing explanation and modeling made everything seem much more doable and reasonable. Lisa - you are an AWESOME teacher - THANK YOU!

  • Melanie implemented a pretty awesome Genius Hour using the Wonderopolis site as the anchor for the experience! After sharing the site, which is an amazing nonfiction resource that has a little something for everyone, with the children, Melanie had them work in partnerships and use their devices to explore and research a topic of interest. The kids were highly engaged and the notes they were generating during their research was truly impressive... I suggest everyone check out this site or touch base with Melanie to get more info!

  • Rande did a really great job explaining the idea of Bar Modeling to her 5th graders within the context of problem solving. After some modeling and guided practice during the whole class instruction, the children worked in small groups to solve various word problems involving decimals and the expectation was that they would use Bar Models to support their thinking and each group met with success because of Rande's support and guidance - WOW!

Curriculum Connections...

Happy TGIF to the most amazing community of educators on the planet... you all ROCK! By the time you read this, I will be on my way to Philly for another weekend of learning. I hope everyone has an awesome weekend as we speed into the holidays... where did this year go?? Although I have all my holiday shopping to do, first and foremost I must successfully navigate this weekend! It is going to be a busy weekend - first a trip to Philly for some classes at Penn on Friday and Saturday and then back home to celebrate Paul's 10th birthday on Sunday with a bowling bash with 20 of his closest friends! With that in mind, thank you all for all of your support, flexibility and kindness over the last five weeks while Paulie has been staying with me - it means more to me than you know. Just so everyone knows, Kelly's mom seems to be making some small strides in a positive direction so hopefully she will be out of the hospital soon and we will regain some normalcy in our lives.

A special thank you to Sunshine for organizing a wonderful Holiday Fiesta on Wednesday! It was such a great evening to just kick back, chat and enjoy some delicious food. Our school community is really an amazing one and that was highlighted for me watching the many interactions during the gathering where most of them involved laughter, smiles and good times. Happy Holidays to all!

As I mentioned at the FEO on Tuesday, we will be celebrating the SEVEN DAYS OF HOLIDAYS starting Monday, December 15th (also happens to be Paulie's birthday). The plan is as follows...

Monday - Dec. 15 - Manic Monday - No HW for all students & No planbooks being collected this month for all staff!

Tuesday - Dec. 16 - Training Tuesday - wear your favorite workout/training/exercise gear!

Wednesday - Dec. 17 - Warm-up Wednesday - there will be some coffee and/or hot chocolate available in the office!

Thursday - Dec. 18 - Thank You Thursday - leave a HANDWRITTEN Thank You note for someone on staff (and dress down so you are comfy while writing that note)!

Friday - Dec. 19 - Fuzzy/Flannel Friday - wear your favorite flannel/fuzzy PJs, shirt or pants & be comfy today!

Monday - Dec. 22 - Manga Monday - join me as I host my annual THANK YOU Holiday Luncheon in the Faculty Room (and dress down with comfy pants so you can eat as much as you want)!

Tuesday - Dec. 23 - Team Cantiague Tuesday - wear your favorite Cantiague or Jericho gear!

This week, as I walked around the building, I spotted these #EDUWINS...

  • Christine launched a new book with her book club but this time each child got an iPad and the book was accessible there using the Kindle app! Christine devoted the kick-off meeting to showing them how to use some of the note taking features of the app and by the end of the session the children were expert users and they were making some awesome predictions. Love this integration of technology especially as it relates to virtual note taking - AMAZING!

  • Thank you to everyone who embraced the Hour of Code challenge and gave their students an opportunity to try some coding - you all ROCK! Whether experimenting with Scratch or trying out LEGO Robotics, many of our children responded really positively to the experience and were excited to engage in coding, which should be our goal with every learning experience. With that in mind, I recommend that you try an hour of coding once a month moving forward... why not?? (I will have the results from the survey about Innovation Day soon!)

  • Joe P. did an awesome lesson with third grade where he integrated the concept of partial product (which can be abstract and confusing) into the topic of area and the children did an awesome job with this approach to multiplication! They were breaking up numbers, multiplying them and then putting them back together in a meaningful (trying to find the area) and appropriate way!

Curriculum Connections...

Happy Friday to all... the first Friday in December! Hope everyone had a wonderful four-day week- even though I know juggling dozens of conferences is often more work than the daily teaching and learning. Please know your efforts do not go unnoticed and the feedback from the parents over the last couple of days has been incredibly positive - they are so grateful to be part of the Cantiague community because of each of you!

In other news, I wanted to share two baby related updates. First off, Melissa Cerullo has extended her leave to stay home with her babies until after the April break - we will definitely miss having her around but thanks to Christina for doing such an awesome job! Also, due to some unforeseen medical needs, Risa's last day was Thursday (today). Her doctors definitely want her to take it easy until Baby Thomas arrives in the next few weeks so Risa will be staying home. Being that this happened a little earlier than we expected we had to enact some plans in a quick fashion and I am thrilled to announce that Katie Quinn will be taking over for Risa during her child care leave. Katie - we know you are going to do an AMAZING job!

Finally, one of our adorable kindergarten students (Dylan) had his last day on Thursday. Being that Dylan had an aide assigned to him, his leaving has facilitated some staffing changes. Starting Monday, Sara Stone will be splitting her time between Ginny and Ally. Also, Caylie Lehrer, will be moving from kindergarten to split her time between Jill and Janine's rooms. Good luck to both Sara and Caylie - we know you will be assets to your new spaces.
This week, as I walked around the building, I spotted these #EDUWINS...

  • Lois D. facilitated an awesome small group session in the speech room for two third grade girls. The focus of the lesson was on "-ed" verbs and she helped the children master the idea of past tense by having them caption real life pictures, play a game and unscramble various sentences. There was so much packed into a 30 minute period and I was blown away by how much the students had grown and how engaged they were the whole period - WOW!

  • Shout out to Lorraine and her work in the library. First off, I LOVE the "We Love Picture Books" poster because getting to see what books different kids and staff love has been so fun! Also, I had a chance to spend time in the library while Lorraine collaborated with Jessica to introduce the fifth grade students to databases and how they could be used to safely research a nonfiction topic. One thing that really impressed me was that Lorraine helped the children understand the difference between SEARCHING and RESEARCHING as a result of collaborating with Jessica and knowing what the kids needed. This was an example of the power of flexible scheduling in the library and the impacts it could have on extending the learning in the classroom... AWESOME!

  • Ginny implemented an awesome writing worksop block that was part of the List and Labels unit of study. First the children listened to a read aloud where Frog and Toad modeled using lists and then the children were challenged to create their own lists of favorite animals. Well, the kids were immediately engaged and they had no trouble generating ideas and they were clearly using various strategies to help them write the names of the animals - such as stretching out the words - and the end results were IMPRESSIVE!

While playing music in the lunchroom the other day (thanks to Rebecca and Alli for being our first Lunch DJs), one of the first grade kids walked up to me and asked, "Mr. Sinanis, where are all the musicians hiding? I hear the music but don't see any people playing music!" Fortunately I was able to explain that all the musicians were hiding in the iPad! LOL!

Curriculum Connections...

I would like to begin by wishing you all a Happy & Healthy Thanksgiving holiday next week - a much needed four day weekend before report cards and conferences! May it be filled with delicious food, great memories with family and friends, some fun, and some much needed rest and relaxation (a certain someone will be working on his dissertation all weekend)!

This time of year always makes me happy because I am reminded that I have so much to be thankful for – my incredible family, supportive friends, personal well-being and of course, each of you (I could never survive the Penn experience or book writing experience or major shift in my personal life without each of you)! I cannot really express how much you all mean to me and how honored I am to be the Lead Learner of this incredibly special community of learners (teachers, students, parents, etc.)! Not a day goes by that I don't walk around this building with a smile on my face. Although the daily pressures and demands can be extremely difficult at times (some days it does feel like we might be getting Punked), one could never tell while walking around this building because each of you handles everything with such patience, high levels of professionalism and pride for our craft as educators. Each of you manages to put the needs of our students and colleagues at the forefront and that is what makes Cantiague so special!

Thank you again for all that each of you do every single day. THANK YOU for your making our Curriculum Fair so awesome tonight; THANK YOU for your support in my current studies at Penn – I promise to get this dissertation done ASAP; THANK YOU for your support of my family and for always asking about Paul – that means the world to me; THANK YOU for all that you do and know that I am extremely thankful that each of you are in my life because you make me a better father, educator and man!

This week, as I walked around #Cantiague this week, I spotted the following #EduWins...

  • This first shout-out goes to the Middle School, Elisa Waters and Don Gately for organizing and hosting the 4th Annual LGBT Forum last Friday and it was amazing. It was a day filled with passionate keynote speakers, incredible learning sessions (Joe Sapienza did an awesome job presenting on the intersection of LGBT and Special Education) and powerful conversations. The highlight of the event for me was the panel of students that kicked off the day - WOW! The way these high school students (including a former Cantiague kid) talked about coming to the realization of their sexuality and how they shared the information moved me to tears. Their maturity, insight and perspectives were amazing and the event in it's entirety made me even prouder to be a gay man within the Jericho community.

  • Christina G. for facilitating an amazing conversation during the class read aloud. The kids were literally hanging on her every word and their conversations were impressive. Christina has also done an amazing job with her EdLine HW postings (yup, those have to get done) because she presents the information in an organized and easily accessible way. AWESOME!

  • Rob and Phil for doing an awesome job during our annual 5th Grade Sports Night last week. The children had fun, the families in attendance were really happy and no one got hurt so overall, it was an AMAZING NIGHT!

  • A final huge shout out to our fifth grade team on the APPY HOUR that they staged this week. All of the fifth graders had the opportunity to visit with each teacher who presented a workshop on a different app. So, the kids learned things like iMovie, PicCollage and Haiku Deck to name a few. AWESOME idea and BRILLIANT EXECUTION!

Please refer to this post (especially for the Schedule of the Week below) for the next couple of weeks!

Curriculum Connections...

TGIF to all! Hope everyone had a wonderful four-day week- I could definitely get used to working four days a week and really enjoyed having a little break on Tuesday. As you know, Paul has been with me over the last week and that has been such an awesome experience. I have really enjoyed getting him ready in the morning, dropping him off at school, putting him to bed and just being with him. Of course, some moments I feel like I am running around like a chicken without a head but I wouldn't trade it for anything. A special thank you to each of you for asking about Paul and his grandma. I am happy to share that her surgery was a success and she is slowly on the road to recovery.

The next week will be a busy one with our Curriculum Fair but I am really excited for the families to see all the wonderful and meaningful ways we are integrating technology into the daily experiences. Seeing the various meaningful ways that technology has been integrated in our school has been an awesome thing to watch - I really applaud your willingness to take risks with technology and keep moving forward even when there are glitches! Meanwhile, when you do encounter a glitch, problem or issue, either Google or YouTube the question and there will almost always be a solution to your problem.

This week, as I walked around the building, I spotted these #EDUWINS...

  • Janine did an AMAZING job facilitating the reading workshop experience. From the mini-lesson on the rug where the children were challenged to make a 3 Star Connection (using text evidence) to the three groups she facilitated afterwards - one group was working with iPads to create Word Clouds to describe the main character from the read aloud text; a second group was reading independently and marking their text to self (specifically to the characters) connections on post-its; and the final group was working with Janine and exploring quotation marks - to the wrap-up at the end where one child shared her Word Cloud with the class, it was AWESOME!

  • Katie has done an amazing job helping to turn around one of the most challenging students we've had this year. His frustration levels were high, his mood was inconsistent and his willingness to engage in work was terrible at the start of the year. But, by working with Karen, MaryAnn and trusting her gut, not only has Katie won this little guy over but she has helped him regain his confidence, focus and ability to learn - BRAVA Katie!

  • Meryl did an AWESOME job during writer's workshop where the focus was revising entries to include dialogue. After modeling with an excerpt from Thank You Mr. Falker, she had the children take out their iPads and using Google Docs, they revised their pieces. Talk about a meaningful way to integrate technology - WOW!

Curriculum Connections...

Happy Halloween and Friday to the most amazing group of people and educators I know and have the honor of working with each day - thank you for being so awesome! I hope everyone has a wonderful night of trick or treating planned and that the weekend ahead is an amazing one. Paul and I will do some trick or treating tonight and then have some bonding time over the weekend - I am really looking forward to it.

As you know, I think you are the most awesome group of educators on the planet and that was reinforced for me in three huge ways this week! First of all, while in Iowa, I was the ONLY principal who did not get a text message, phone call or email about a "crisis" at school that needed to be addressed... not a one because you all kept things rolling along beautifully and smoothly... THANK YOU! (Don't worry - I didn't rub it in that I was the only one who didn't get a call). Then, as of this week EVERY SINGLE CLASSROOM here at Cantiague is using Twitter to tell our collective story... BOOM (Twitter term for awesomeness)!!! That is AWESOME!! I have no words to express how powerful it is to share pictures of our amazing kids immersed in powerful learning opportunities. Not only have we created a high level of transparency (because we can stand behind everything we do) but we have also given our families an entry point for conversation with their children and that is really important! Finally, as if these two weren't enough, as you know, yesterday I put out a call for shared #EduWins and within minutes I had three emails where some of you were celebrating your colleagues... WOW!! That is AWESOME! Thank you for letting me be part of this incredible community.

In case you didn't get a chance to check it out, here is the link to our staff Google Doc with Genius Hour resources! Please feel free to add to this group resource...

This week, as I walked around #Cantiague this week, I spotted the following #EduWins...

  • Lisa shared an update about the Read To Dogs program, which re-launched last week with a variety of children. Although I am personally not a huge fan of dogs, it is clear that reading to this dog has been transformational for some of our children - thank you Lisa and Elaine for facilitating and overseeing this important program!

  • Ginny shared the amazing Project Based Learning experience the Kindergarten team had this week... Building Haunted Houses. They read a Halloween story as a whole group, then split the classes up into different groups so that each teacher had kids from all three classes. The children then looked at Haunted Houses on the smartboard, talked about different shapes and sorted their recycled items  into groups. They then worked as a team to select objects they wanted to use to construct their haunted houses! Then they came back together to paint and decorate the houses. It was a really cute project and the kids had a blast!!! !

  • Tali shared some of the awesomeness unfolding in the Science Room with Laurie... In the science lab, Mrs. Oddo had the kids use evidence to prove that erosion and deposition have occurred. The kids used a slant table set up with sand or rocks. Water filled a tube and the kids observed what happened to the sand and rocks filling the slant table. The best part was watching the children take out what entered the slop bucket!  Only one variable changed at the different tables. The children were engaged and the conversations were awesome!

Please refer to this post (especially for the Schedule of the Week below) for the next couple of weeks!
